Oliver: I'd like to ask about your writing as well. You often write about moments that most of us would probably walk past. How do you find those subjects?

Emma: More often than not, I stay with an ordinary conversation a little longer. Recently, a friend was thinking about getting rid of an old chair. At first, we were just talking about making more space. But when I asked where she'd bought it, she started telling me about her first apartment.

Oliver: So a conversation about a chair becomes a conversation about a life. Do you take notes at the time, or write things down afterwards?

Emma: With a friend, I usually make a short note afterwards. I don't try to preserve everything. I separate the words that stayed with me, the pauses I noticed, and my own thoughts about the conversation.

Oliver: Even in your notes, you're keeping their words separate from your thoughts. How do those notes help when you sit down to write?

Emma: I choose one moment that I'm still thinking about. I write a short description and ask myself why it stayed with me.
